Is Social Media a Conversation or a Popularity Contest

Trees in a forest

It’s funny how people equate likes on social media with being popular. That we need likes, as if we’re still in high school. Personally, I couldn’t handle being the prom queen. In fact, I’d rather stay home and not go to the prom at all. (And that’s what I actually did.) And so popularity might not be what we are seeking.

It’s funny because if you have an in-person conversation with someone they usually at least nod to let you know they are listening and heard you.

So why not on social media? Is it wrong to expect some kind of response to a post? Why does that make you a narcissist? To me, it’s a natural expectation to have when you say something.

I’m now concluding that I shouldn’t expect a normal interaction on social media. I might not get a response at all ever. That an in-person conversation will always be better. That is if the person I am speaking with is listening and responds in a normal way.

A conversation where I am speaking only to myself is very unnatural. In fact, doctors will tell you you have a problem if you have conversations with yourself.

So social media can be fun but beware if you end up only talking to yourself.

Remember the famous question, “If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?”
