From today’s AP News, Pope Francis just appointed an Italian nun, Sister Simona Brambilla “to become prefect of the department responsible for all the Catholic Church’s religious orders.” (I wonder if Pope Francis was influenced by the ending of the movie, “Conclave” (2024). And of course, “Cabrini” (2024).)

At age 59, Sister Simona Brambilla is the first woman prefect ever in the Vatican. But the pope also named as a co-leader, or “pro-prefect,” Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, a Salesian.

“”One day, I pray, the church will see women for the capable leaders they already are,” she said. “It’s ridiculous to think she needs help running a Vatican dicastery.”” — Natalia Imperatori-Lee, Manhattan University

I agree, but perhaps Pope Francis wants to avoid Sister Simona Brambilla being called a “feminist” for having that kind of power at the Vatican. Either way, the Salesian Cardinal adds a nice balance. Let’s pray they do well together!

Everyone likes to get promoted, so why not nuns? I agree that the idea of women priests is wrong; there are spiritual reasons against it. But I do support them having a greater role above lay people. Currently, nuns and sisters are on the same level as parishioners. Nuns and sisters have restrictions we parishioners don’t. Parishioners can come and go from church and church life…
